EPA 2010 Emission Reduction Technology Compliance

As the information begins to come in about EPA2O10 Emission Reduction Technology compliance, the news on the 2010 model trucks indicates the mandated equipment will be more expensive and complex.

Increased Cost: We now have the first published indication as to pricing of the new SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) equipment.

Volvo Truck North America announced on March 2nd its trucks with EPA 2010 emissions reduction technology will include a surcharge of $9,600.00*. It’s difficult to imagine that the other manufacturers will not be in this same range.

International is the only chassis manufacturer in the world that is going to attempt to meet the 2010 emission standard without using SCR.

Increased Complexity: Here at Oilmen’s we are beginning to see some of this new equipment. There is more hardware, wiring, and controls. This is not a simple piece of additional equipment. Additionally, one of the main issues will be a need for an additional urea tank of approximately 30 gallons. This tank will have to be filled approximately once out of every 3rd or 4th fuel fill up. It takes up a lot of room and when full of urea weighs approximately 300lbs.

Bottom line, we believe, once this data begins to find its way to the desk of fleet managers, there will be a pre-buying push not unlike the pre-emission situation of 2007.

As a matter of fact, after sitting through presentations by the truck suppliers and spending hours with the engineers of the companies that make and blend urea, we are of the opinion that pre-buying this time is much more important than it was in 2007.

We are asking you to at least look at your late 2008 and 2009 potential equipment needs and consider the substantial savings in money and potential maintenance issues that would be avoided by ordering pre-urea equipment.

We have tanks, pre-emission new and used chassis and complete units on the ground. We have shop time right now and the truck manufacturers are not busy yet. We are encouraging you to discuss this now.
